Why Scalp Problems Are So Common in Singapore — And What Actually Helps

More and more clients are struggling with scalp issues.

As a hair stylist working daily with clients in Singapore, one thing stands out: scalp problems are incredibly common here. The most frequent complaint is an oily scalp — excess sebum that makes hair feel heavy, greasy, and difficult to manage.

Singapore's intense UV exposure, heat, humidity, and dietary habits all play a role. The scalp is affected by many factors at once, which makes it hard to pinpoint a single cause. But one thing is clear: ignoring scalp issues will eventually affect the health and appearance of your hair.

Beautiful hair starts with a healthy scalp.

No matter how good your conditioner or treatment is, it can't compensate for a scalp that's out of balance.

Hair grows from the scalp. When the scalp environment is compromised, the quality, shine, and strength of your hair are affected — not just now, but for the hair that's still growing beneath the surface. Scalp care isn't just about today's hair. It's an investment in tomorrow's.

Why drugstore scalp shampoos usually don't work

Many people with oily scalps reach for scalp-specific shampoos from the drugstore. In most cases, the results are disappointing.

There are two reasons for this.

First, these shampoos often over-cleanse. Stripping too much oil triggers the scalp to produce even more sebum as a defense response — making the problem worse, not better.

Second, the current trend of heavily moisturizing shampoos isn't always the right answer either. An oily scalp doesn't need more moisture. What it needs is balance.

Over-cleansing and over-moisturizing are both the wrong approach. The right answer lies somewhere in between — and it's different for everyone.

Finding the right shampoo on your own is genuinely difficult.

Every scalp is different. Some people are dry and oily at the same time. Others are affected by stress, diet, or seasonal changes. There is no single product that works for everyone.

That's why trying to solve scalp issues alone — by switching between products and hoping something works — rarely leads to lasting results.

Let's figure it out together.

My job as a stylist is to look at each client's scalp and hair individually, and find the care routine that actually works for them.
